“Listen Up Manchester”: Honouring Kate Rackham’s Legacy on the Dancefloor

Manchester, UK – January 25th, 2025 – The second annual “Listen Up Manchester” club night returns to Kable Club in the heart of the city, celebrating the life and legacy of Kate Rackham. Kate, also known as the Teacher with Cancer, was the founder of Fighting to Be Heard, a charity supporting individuals with secondary breast cancer (SBC).

This special night runs from 7 PM to 1 AM and will feature an incredible lineup of DJs, all playing in support of Fighting to Be Heard. Kate’s husband, Mark Rackham, has extended free guest list invitations to staff and patients at The Christie, the hospital where Kate received care.

Mark Rackham shared:
“I’m proud to continue Kate’s vital charity fundraising work and can’t think of a better way to honour her memory than on the dancefloor with some of her all-time favourite DJs playing.”

The event is supported by an incredible group of DJs and friends of Kate who remember her vibrant energy:

  • Dave Haslam: “I always loved seeing Kate on the dancefloor and out and about; she had such spirit, it sparkled the first time I met her just after the millennium and if anything that energy and positivity grew as she got older, and, unbelievably, when she got ill. An inspirational young woman.”

  • Clint Boon: “I’ll never forget Kate. One of the most inspiring human beings I’ve ever met. She had the most beautiful smile and a wonderful spirit. I feel blessed to have known her.”

  • Justine Alderman (Across The Tracks): “All my best memories with Kate are at gigs, festivals, or clubs—this is the best way I can think of to celebrate her life and legacy.”

  • Martin Glynn (Across The Tracks): “Kate was such a force of nature; she truly understood the value of life. Her teaching didn’t just stop at school. Her greatest lesson was to show us, by example, how important it is to make the most of it… to celebrate and cherish what you’ve got and whenever you can, try to make a positive difference.”

  • Huw Thomas (DJ Adverse Camber): “A sense of mischief and a smile that would illuminate every room she entered.”

  • Matt Robey: “I was DJing in Lancaster last March, and Kate came down to the night, which I didn’t expect. On the dancefloor, I asked what she was drinking, and she said, ‘lemonade, I’m driving back to Manchester tonight because I have chemo in the morning.’ I just thought that was amazing and said so much about her character. She stayed until 1am.”
  • Kathryn Gordon, Chair and Volunteer of Fighting to Be Heard, added: “The event is a fitting tribute to Kate because she loved music and having a good time. I can still see her singing ‘Mr. Wendall’ word for word on the dancefloor on her birthday. She was a serious lover of music, and everything she did was carried out with intense passion and dedication—she was all in. Just as she was with the charity she founded. This event will not only be a heartfelt celebration of her life and will also provide much-needed grants to those living with SBC.”

Kate’s life and work continue to inspire. Her last tweet went viral, touching 1.8 million people globally, and her commitment to supporting SBC patients lives on through Fighting to Be Heard. Proceeds from this event will directly support the charity’s mission to raise awareness, provide financial support to SBC patients, and foster a sense of connection.
